The Yangtse and Huai Rivers cut through Anhwei, dividing it into three areas from north to south — Huaipei, Huainan and Wannan. The greater part of Huaipei, the area north of the Huai, consists of plain less than 50 metres above sea level. In the past it was almost all dry land, growing mainly wheat and sweet potatoes.
